Located 3 miles outside the city centre of Peterborough, this is justifiably a popular spot to visit. Run by the Nene Trust Ferry Meadows Country Park is open all year round. Catering for those that want a walk in nature, to families that need entertaining and water sports lovers. There genuinely is something for everyone here

We visited in July as we were staying just down the road at the local campsite and had a lovely time visiting and walking around the park. When we arrived we were stood looking at the trail map outside the visitor centre. We were then lucky a volunteer came over and kindly offered help. He also gave us an A4 sized map to take away with us.

Ferry Meadows Country Park Map

There are a choice of 4 walking routes at the park. You will find all of these are well signposted in the traditional manner as you go round. Two shorter walks at approx 40 minutes and two longer ones which realistically take just over an hour. As a warning, the bluebell walk does have some steep gradients to climb on the path. These can largely be avoided by taking the riverside boardwalk detour on the map.

Catering

There are two fixed catering outlets at the park.

The main Ferry Meadows Cafe is located next to the main Visitor Centre with a view out across Overton Lake. The cafe has a choice of both outdoor and indoor seating available to customers and offers you a good range of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks options. All of which are available to consume onsite or take away.  We felt the pricing of these was on the dear end of acceptable, but not so bad as to spoil the visit

The Lakeside Kitchen and Bar is situated overlooking Gunwade Lake in the Lakeside area. It is independently run by Meadow Brown Restaurants, and offers a more comprehensive menu. This includes a varied choice of main meals for breakfast and lunch.

As we visited in the height of summer on a very hot July day, there were also a number of other catering concessions. We found these in the vicinity of the main hub where you find the visitor centre, farm shop and Ferry Meadows Cafe. These were offering a good variety of ice cream and cold drinks, which was much appreciated on a hot day.

Other Activities

Located at the visitor centre is an onsite farm and gift / souvenir shop. All profits from this go towards the upkeep of the park.

The Nene Outdoors Watersports and Activity centre can be found over at the Lakeside complex. They offer visitors a broad range of activities such as canoes, paddlesboards, kayaks and pedalos, all on a pay as you go basis

Just down the road from the visitor centre on the edge of the park is Orton Mere station on the Nene Valley Railway. They operate steam and heritage rail services throughout the year. All services are run by volunteers and go through the stunning local countryside.
