Tophill Low Nature Reserve is a large and highly regarded nature reserve in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, near Driffield and Watton-on-the-Wold. It’s owned and managed by Yorkshire Water and combines important wildlife habitat with an active water treatment works setting.
Overall the site as a whole is a 300-acre nature reserve featuring a wide variety of habitats: two large reservoirs, marshes, ponds, grassland and woodland
Tophill Low was awarded Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) status in 1989 with over 160 bird species to be seen throughout the year. Even in the depths of winter it is a bird watchers’ paradise with 60+ species to be seen. The reserve has 12 hides and over 3 km of paths. These are open all year round for you to explore all the wildlife from a wide variety of vantage points.
You can see a wide variety of wildlife throughout the year
- Waterfowl such as gadwall, shoveler, tufted duck, teal, wigeon and goldeneye.
- Woodland and marsh species, which are often visible in different seasons.
- Other wildlife such as otters, dragonflies, grass snakes and more.
Facilities
The reserve caters well for those with accessibility needs. There are a good collection of accessible facilities, including wheelchair-accessible hides and paths and toilets.
For families there are a number of picnic areas and a visitor centre with sightings boards.
Dogs unfortunately are not permitted (except assistance dogs) due to the amount of wildlife the SSSI status of the site.
