This is one we stumbled on by accident after a weekend away in Great Yarmouth. On the drive home we went past Filby Broad and just said wow.

Located just outside Great Yarmouth on the A1064, Filby itself is a pretty village that is unspoilt and full of rural charm. Filby Broad is part of the Trinity Broads collection. The Trinity Broads combine to a 783 acre site of special scientific interest (SSSI).

The lake at Filby Broad is connected to the River Bure, as well as via a small inlet to both Ormesby Broad as well as Rollesby Broad. Currently Filby Broad sees use as a reservoir serving the Broadland area as well as Great Yarmouth and is owned and maintained by the Essex and Suffolk Water Company.

The water quality at the Trinity Broads is fantastic with beautiful clear water. This provides a fantastic eco-system for aquatic plants with many rare species to be found in the area. Otters & water vole also thrive in the reserve, and it provides a key winter home for many species of wintering wildfowl.

There are a number of footpaths that provide a series of short walks around Filby Broad, and the nature reserve has it’s own boardwalk too. The below map from Norfolk Wildlife Trust highlights these

Facilities

There are toilets and disabled parking onsite for visitors. However there is no catering or refreshments available as with most Norfolk Wildlife Trust sites. However, the entrance to the site is next to the Filby Bridge Restaurant. Filby is just 6 miles from Potter Heigham and 7 miles from Great Yarmouth so ample facilities do exist in the surrounding local area.
